HMS Wildfire, based at Northwood, has been serving the Home Counties since 2000 when the long-standing unit was re-formed for the third time in its existence as a ‘stone frigate’.
As a shore base/establishment, the name Wildfire has been used extensively since 1889: in Sheerness for nearly 70 years, then a naval reserve headquarters in Chatham and, since 2000, in the grounds of the UK’s military headquarters in Northwood.
The anniversary event included a ship’s company divisions parade, a service of recognition, and a reception.
Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire Robert Voss was guest of honour and reflected on the history of the Wildfire name while recognising the ongoing contribution of Reservists to UK Defence, noting that the Northwood RNR centre remained the shining example of Reservist units in Hertfordshire.
Having cut the anniversary cake jointly with AB Baker – the youngest rating serving at Wildfire who’s recently joined \following service in the Sea Cadet Corps.
Mr Voss then presented awards to Wildfire personnel who’d stood out especially over the past 12 months.
Able Seaman Rowell Jarman received the Commanding Officer’s Prize for his consistent commitment and for his mobilisation to the Eastern Mediterranean earlier in 2025.
Sub Lieutenant Ed Smith was awarded the Firefighter’s Axe, presented by the Worshipful Company of Firefighters, for resilience and perseverance in completing his training.
Able Seaman Brendan Carr was recognised for his outstanding contribution to high-quality media output for the Maritime Reserve and wider fleet.
Midshipman Karlis Zivtins received the Wildfire Top Achiever award for ongoing support across all aspects of Reserve Service. He is currently progressing through his training and is preparing for his initial sea time.
Officer Cadet Paul Tanto received the Best New Entry award for notable progress and commitment since joining the Naval Service in autumn 2024.
Lieutenant Commander Rubin Nash, Wildfire’s Commanding Officer, said the unit’s 25th birthday was an apt moment to reflect on the successes of and dedication shown by personnel past and present.
He continued: “I’m immensely proud of our ship’s company. Their achievements, whether on operations overseas or in supporting roles here at home, highlight the versatility and professionalism of the Royal Naval Reserve.
“The commitment shown by our award recipients today is especially commendable and represents the very best of what Wildfire stands for.
“As we look to the future, we will continue to grow, adapt, and serve with pride — building on the legacy of those who have come before us.”
The ceremony is one a series of jubilee events throughout the year, with a specially-minted commemorative coin for attendees.
