The First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan MS paid a fact-finding visit to the home of the Royal Naval Reserves in the country, HMS Cambria.

During her visit to the relatively-new headquarters in Cardiff Bay, the First Minister toured facilities and was  briefed about the role of the Maritime Reserves in Wales and an understanding of the support they give to the wider Royal Navy, at Sea and ashore around the world.

HMS Cambria is also the base for other Naval and Royal Marines Units, and the minister was able to gain some knowledge of the work and training that the University Royal Naval Unit and the Royal Marines Reserves Cardiff achieve.

Mrs Morgan was also briefed by Naval Regional Commander Wales and Western England – Commodore Tristram Kirkwood (NRCWWE) about his role as the Royal Navy’s ambassador in Wales.

“It was a pleasure to welcome the First Minister on her inaugural visit to HMS Cambria and explain to her the role the Maritime Reserves have in Wales, as well as the wider support we offer Royal Navy,” said Commander Carolyn Jones, Cambria’s Commanding Officer.

“The Reservists from HMS Cambria come from many different backgrounds with a wide variety of skills to offer. Today’s visit has helped the First Minister understand our commitment we all give to the South Wales community and the nation as a whole.”

This was shown clearly when Mrs Morgan presented Warrant Office 1 Rob Govier with a Bar to his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (LSGC), which has earned after 35 Years reckonable service.
