HMS Chiddingfold and HMS Penzance in Oman

14 March 2016
Following a challenging first month conducting operations in the Gulf, the crews of HMS Chiddingfold and HMS Penzance were given an opportunity to conduct Adventurous Training in Muscat, Oman.

Having transited safely through the Strait of Hormuz, both ships arrived in Muscat where the crews eagerly anticipated the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities, including mountain biking, mountaineering and paddle boarding.

The crews were also able to explore the city of Muscat and its surrounding area, which is steeped in rich history and culture dating back thousands of years.

Engineering Technician Andrew Liston organised a trip to visit Wadi Shab, a natural gorge cut into the rock face by a freshwater stream heading out towards the coast.

Located an hour and a half outside Muscat, Wadi Shab is known as one of the most spectacularly beautiful areas of Oman. 25 members of both ships companies took part in this outing and enjoyed a day of climbing and jumping into the waters of the gorge.

Visiting a place like the Wadi Shab reminds me of why I joined the Royal Navy as I would never get opportunities such as this in civilian life.

Able Rate Liam Dore

Able Rate Liam Dore said: “I loved the whole experience of Muscat, from the smooth marble of the Mosques to the roughness of the mountain tops; it is a very beautiful city.

"Visiting a place like the Wadi Shab reminds me of why I joined the Royal Navy as I would never get opportunities such as this in civilian life.”

The Operations Officer and head of the Warfare Department on board HMS Chiddingfold, Lieutenant Rob Stone-Ward added: “Visits such as this are crucial for the Ship’s Company."

"Working in a high intensity environment on board a deployed Mine Hunter brings with it real challenges and can result in fatigue.

"This period of adventurous training serves not only as a fresh challenge for the members of the crew, which takes their mind of their normal work, but also allows them to explore another country.

"It is a welcome opportunity to recharge ones batteries in preparation for the months ahead.”
