'Flash' runs to victory for Royal Navy

A Royal Navy sailor from Plymouth nick-named 'Flash’ has scooped the title of the fastest man in the UK’s armed forces.

Leading Seaman (Logistics (Logs)) Olusoji Fasuba, serving in the frigate HMS Somerset, won the 100-metre sprint title at the Inter-Services Athletics Championship.  

The Royal Navy athlete has a strong pedigree in track and field, remaining the African Record holder for 100m set at 9.85 seconds. 

He said, “I was so glad that I could help the team put in such a good performance. My fellow naval athletes are fantastic and always put in a lot of hard work on the track; it was great to have done so well.” 

Commanding Officer of HMS Somerset, Commander Tim Berry said of his crew member, “He is pure class, both professionally and on the track, Leading Logs Fasuba is not only the quickest man in all three services, he is one of the quickest men in the world."

Although unable to commit to any training this year due to the ship being operational and at sea, his win in this year’s 100m was an impressive performance. He also contributed to the Royal Navy team 4x100m relay team victory in the key anchor role. 

Commander Berry added, “The Royal Navy continues to try and promote and nurture the competitive edge that sports bring to the service and Leading Logs Fasuba is an example to just that.  He has done exceptionally well and we are glad to have him serving in Somerset."

His success was integral to a Royal Navy men’s team overall performance deemed ‘the best in living memory’ and within touching distance of the other RAF and Army teams.
