3 June 2026
Royal Navy and Royal Marines boxers delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 CISM Box Cup in Warendorf, Germany, returning home with two gold, two silver and one bronze medal against some of Europe’s strongest military boxing talent.

The three-day tournament, organised by the International Military Sports Council (CISM), brought together military athletes from Germany, France, Luxembourg, Slovenia and Latvia, providing a highly competitive international stage for the UK team.

Leading the charge was Royal Marine Phil Green, who produced a series of dominant displays to win all three of his bouts by unanimous decision. His exceptional performances earned him a gold medal and the prestigious Best Boxer of the Tournament award.

Joining him on the top step of the podium was fellow Royal Marine Lewis Hanif, who claimed gold after recording two emphatic stoppage victories, including a first-round technical knockout in the final.

The Germany CISM Box Cup was my favourite experience and the highlight of my boxing career so far. I felt very relaxed while winning all three of my fights, and I was thrilled to be named Best Boxer of the Tournament. I can’t wait to go back.

Further success came through Marine Billy Winwood and Captain Euan McConnell, who both secured silver medals following strong performances in their respective divisions. Marine Ethan McDowell added a bronze medal to the team’s tally after a series of closely contested bouts.

Head Coach Sergeant Dan Ward praised the squad’s efforts and professionalism throughout the competition.

“The team represented Royal Navy and Royal Marines boxing with distinction throughout the tournament. They displayed skill, discipline and determination against strong international opposition, returning home with gold, silver and bronze medals. Their performances are a credit to themselves, their units and Service boxing as a whole.”
