About each discipline within Royal Navy Cycling:

BMX

  • BMX racing consists of eight riders and a complex course of high-speed curves, big bumps and even bigger jumps between the start gate and podium glory. The goal of BMX racing is simple, cross the finish line first. However, that is easier said than done. BMX racing is the perfect sport to build your fitness and bike handling skills whilst mentally challenging you at the same time. Our racers race everything from local club races all the way up to regional and national level.

Cyclocross (CX)

  • Cyclo-cross races typically take place through the autumn and winter months. Each CX race takes place on a short circuit, normally 1.5 to 2.5 miles in length, over an extensive number of laps. Courses feature a variety of terrains, such as paved tracks, wooded trails, grass banks and steep hills. A range of obstacles are also to be found at points around the course, challenging the rider at every turn. While much of the course can be ridden, the real secret to success is the ability to quickly dismount, carrying the bike while navigating many of the obstructions on foot and then remounting and picking up the pedalling pace without losing too much time.

Gravity Enduro (GE)

  • Gravity Enduro is a competitive event held on off-road terrain which has its focus on how fast the downhill sections of a course can be completed. It is a long event covering large distances with numerous sections against the clock. Enduro combines physical fitness for both the down and uphill parts of the race as well as mental stamina. In general, enduro races involve anywhere from 3-6 timed stages. The timed portions of the race are downhill varying in steepness, length, and difficulty depending on location and level of race you are competing at. Between each stage, there will be untimed “transfer stages” that are mostly uphill to get you to your next timed downhill section.

Downhill (DH)

  • Downhill mountain biking is a genre of mountain biking practised on steep, rough terrain that often features jumps, drops, rock gardens and other technical obstacles. You are uplifted to the start of the course by either a ski lift or more commonly a van or land rover towing a trailer in this country. The format of a downhill race usually has a practise day the day before which consists of a track walk and as many practises runs of the track as you want.

Cross Country (XC)

  • Cross country mountain biking is one of the most accessible forms of mountain biking. All you need is a mountain bike and some countryside to explore; bridleways, single tracks, trails and fire roads provide an endless adventure! XC racing is the only form of mountain biking in the Olympics and has been since 1996. When racing a XC course you are to expect climbs and descents that are fast and flowing with some more technical sections to challenge the riders.

Virtual riding

  • Virtual racing is quite a new discipline to Navy Cycling; however, it is an accessible and engaging way to ride your bike indoors, perfect for staying fit in all weather conditions. All you need is a turbo trainer or a dedicated indoor cycling trainer and an App on your computer, phone or tablet. Once set up you can explore virtual worlds, embark on tailored training programmes and most importantly compete against other virtual racers.

Time Trials (TT)

  • Time Trial races are against the clock taking place on either a road or on a track.  They are individual event which sees you cover a set distance as fast as you can. TT is an ideal way to get started with your cycling, develop basic skills and a hunger to strive to better yourself each time you take on a course.

Road

  • Road Racing is a form of bike racing where you compete in a group on either a closed circuit or open roads. The first to cross the line is deemed the winner. However, it is not always the strongest rider who wins, so tactics, teamwork and a keen sense of what's going on around you are essential when competing on the road.
