Our athletics association is organised by discipline:

Half and Full Marathon

  • The Royal Navy has a busy programme of races and even its own Half-Marathon, the Heron Half, held at Yeovilton.
  • Half and Full Marathon runners compete at Navy and Inter-Service level, including at the London Marathon.
  • The annual ‘Warriors Across the Sea Challenge’ sees RN athletes compete with their American rivals at the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC and the Big Half in London in alternate years
  • Endurance athletes also benefit from the warm-weather training camp and sports tours

Trail

  • Our newest discipline, Trail running offers a range of off-road races at distances up to 100km in length, competing for the Navy against the other services at mass participation events across the country.
  • With Individual and Team categories, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved, alongside support to help you achieve your personal goals.

Cross Country

  • Competed across 10km for the men and 8km for the women, the cross-country season offers regional, Navy championship and Inter-Services events.
  • Inclusive and welcoming; cross country is competed for on an individual and team basis and anyone can join in and represent their unit, region or the service!

Track and Field

  • A full range of running, throwing and jumping events are supported
  • Annual regional competitions feed into the Royal Navy championships, held at our state-of-the-art track in HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth. Selected athletes represent the Royal Navy against the other services at the Inter-Services championship
  • Friendly competitions are held against university and club teams
  • Specialist coaching is available and Track and Field athletes benefit from attending the warm-weather training camp and sports tours.

Endurance - Road

  • Road running is most popular sport in the UK!
  • The Royal Navy Athletics Association offers coaching, training and competition in all distances, with a busy fixture list, team and individual competition
  • The main distances (5K and 10K) are competed for at Navy, Inter-Service and combined services levels.
  • Regular training is available at HMS Temeraire
