Situated in Cambridge and serving universities across East Anglia, University Royal Naval Unit Cambridge (URNU Cambridge) offers members the chance to learn new skills, meet others, enjoy social events, strengthen leadership skills, experience time at sea and undertake adventurous training such as offshore sailing.

Acting Midshipman Andrew Claydon's Story

In June 2024 I undertook sea time with the URNU aboard HMS Ranger, an Archer class patrol vessel. We embarked in Hamburg and were soon integrated with the ship’s company, undergoing hands-on training in seamanship and participating in ceremonial tasks.

Over the following week, we transited back to the UK with stopovers in Amsterdam and Bruges. While at sea we experienced a diverse range of training in navigation, helmsmanship, and radio communication, all while contending with sometimes challenging weather - particularly in the English Channel!

Our three stopover days also allowed for time off to explore the cities and socialise, with highlights being the Euros Fan Zone in Hamburg and late-night karaoke in Amsterdam!

Overall, the trip was an unforgettable and greatly rewarding experience that gave me an invaluable insight into life in the Royal Navy. Without the URNU such a unique opportunity would have never been available.

Meet the team

Commanding Officer

Lt Richard George RN

The Commanding Officer is in charge of their own unit. They manage the unit, staff and students. Commanding Officers’ are in charge of what their unit can participate in throughout the year. They are in charge of their own budget, safety of personnel and unit routines.

Coxswain

CPO Shaun Donnelly

The Coxswain supports the Commanding Officer and deputises as required. They are responsible for the day to day running of the unit and activities.

Senior Training Officer

The Senior Training Officer is the lead Training Officer for each unit. They oversee the syllabus for training within the unit from the training team. This can include managing the training plan and overseeing training delivery from the other Training Officers’. They have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of training, from adventure training to navigation to ship deployments.

Regional Administration Officer

The regional Administration Officer is responsible to the Commanding Officer for carrying out the administration of unit activities.
