HMS Raleigh
Located near Torpoint in Cornwall, HMS Raleigh is the largest Royal Navy training establishment in the South West (set across a 239-acre site) and is the front door to a career in the Royal Navy.
Role of the base
HMS Raleigh provides comprehensive training programs that equip new recruits with the essential skills and knowledge needed for a successful naval career. This training establishment offers a ten-week Initial Naval Training program where recruits develop core values and essential skills, and this combines classroom learning with the latest technology across a range of simulated scenarios.
Training units
The schools on site provide a broad training spectrum that promotes teamwork and personal growth.
Military Training Unit
The Military Training Unit (MTU) is the lead school for all Military Training within the Royal Navy. MTU provides cutting edge weapons training for sailors of all levels, ensuring they are fully prepared to protect themselves or their units on operations at sea and ashore.
Board and Search Training School
Board and Search training is an intensive three week training course. The training teaches individual skills and the roles and responsibilities of the team, and a collective training period where the team carry out a number of practice boardings by day and night.
Royal Navy School Submarine
The Royal Navy Submarine School provides training to officers and ratings specialising in weapons engineering and warfare operations. Courses range from initial professional training to allow submariners to operate beneath the waves, to later career courses which prepare personnel for promotion and to use new equipment.
Royal Navy School of Seamanship
The Royal Navy School of Seamanship provides career training for seaman specialists and seamanship safety training to all new entry recruits. It consists of a classroom-based main school, a land-based replenishment at sea training facility and a waterfront sea sense training centre.
School of Maritime Survival
The School of Maritime Survival provides Royal Navy personnel with vital skills in fire-fighting, damage control and first aid to maintain safety. All sailors must undergo this training before taking up an appointment at sea.

Base history
1940
HMS Raleigh is commissioned.
1944
Raleigh becomes a D-Day embarkation centre for US Navy Forces.
1959
Raleigh becomes the new entry training establishment for all Ratings.
1971-1978
The establishment is completely is re-modernised.
1981
Womens Royal Navy Service basic training transfers from HMS Dauntless.
1983
The Royal Navy Supply School relocates from HMS Pembroke and basic training for Artificers transfers from HMS Fisgard.
1990
Basic training for males and females is integrated.
1991
The Royal Navy School of Seamanship is opened.
1994
The Royal Navy Cookery School relocates from Aldershot.
2000
The Royal Navy Submarine School transfers from Gosport.
2001
The Military Training School relocates from HMS Cambridge.
