Aims

To train and teach the student intermediate skills in conducting and rehearsal techniques, scoring and composition, supported with professionally relevant academic subjects in music.

Course Details

  • Conducting, score preparation and rehearsal techniques (wind band, parade band)
  • Elements of music (music theory)
  • Harmony and compositional techniques. Harmony includes modulation, secondary seventh chords and jazz notation
  • Composition, scoring and arranging (wind band and orchestra)
  • Aural perception, including melodic and rhythmic dictation, identification of music from different styles and periods, etc
  • Music history and analysis, covering music from the Middle Ages to the present
  • Viva voce: oral discussion covering all aspects of the course

Requirements

  • Grade 5 ABRSM music theory
  • Significant experience as an instrumental performer
  • Desirable to have some conducting experience
  • Acquaintance with Sibelius software
  • Working dress and dress uniform

Exams and Qualifications Gained

  • Written and practical examinations take place near the end of the course
  • There is a coursework assignment: students submit an arrangement or composition
  • ABRSM grade 6 music theory
