Aims
To train and teach the student intermediate skills in conducting and rehearsal techniques, scoring and composition, supported with professionally relevant academic subjects in music.
Course Details
- Conducting, score preparation and rehearsal techniques (wind band, parade band)
- Elements of music (music theory)
- Harmony and compositional techniques. Harmony includes modulation, secondary seventh chords and jazz notation
- Composition, scoring and arranging (wind band and orchestra)
- Aural perception, including melodic and rhythmic dictation, identification of music from different styles and periods, etc
- Music history and analysis, covering music from the Middle Ages to the present
- Viva voce: oral discussion covering all aspects of the course
Requirements
- Grade 5 ABRSM music theory
- Significant experience as an instrumental performer
- Desirable to have some conducting experience
- Acquaintance with Sibelius software
- Working dress and dress uniform
Exams and Qualifications Gained
- Written and practical examinations take place near the end of the course
- There is a coursework assignment: students submit an arrangement or composition
- ABRSM grade 6 music theory
