Aim

The course is designed to give Marine Engineer officers:

  • A deep understanding of stability so as to enable them to assess its effect on ships in operations and practical situations. This prepares the student for roles such as docking officer, or seagoing officer responsible for ballast control systems.
  • The knowledge to carry out informed inspections of a ship structure, advise on likely causes of damage, and provide repair solutions to defects.

Course details

On completion of the course, the student will have completed the following modules:

  • Ship stability – including docking, grounding, salvage and operational considerations
  • Docking – including visit
  • Hull – including updates on Health and Safety, confined space regulations and MARPOL
  • Structures – looking at materials, forces, surveying and standards
  • Practical survey experience
  • Commercial ship construction and classification issues

Requirements

HND level engineering or equivalent.
