Currently studying at a UK Medical or Dental School, or planning to? You could be eligible for a medical or dental cadetship.

If you’re studying for A-levels that include a science-based course, you can apply for a cadetship, which leads to Medical Officer and Dental Officer careers. Providing you are able to gain a place at Medical or Dental School, you’ll get your tuition fees paid and receive a salary for the final three years of your course.

If successful, you’ll only need to pass in your degree before going on to foundation training within the Royal Navy. After that, you’ll complete 15 weeks’ Initial Naval Training (Officer) at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) and begin your career. You’ll be committed to a minimum of six years’ service. But that time will be packed with travel, new experiences and continuous development.

  • Aged 21 to 36
  • 5 GCSEs at grade 7 or higher, including English and Maths
  • Studying at UK Medical/Dental School
  • There’s no requirement for you to have been an A-level scholarship student
  • Minimum height of 145cm

Joining process

From picking your profession to starting on your first day, these are the steps you'll take to join.

Step 1

Register Your Interest

Once you’ve registered your interest in a Cadetship within the Medical and Healthcare Profession, and have satisfied some basic eligibility criteria, you will be sent an online application form.

Step 2

Complete Application Form

We’ll send you a link to a digital application form for you to complete. You should select the appropriate career funded role (Dental or Medical Officer) and submit this.

Step 3

Defence Aptitude Assessment (DAA)

You’ll be tested on: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Work Rate, Spatial Reasoning, Electrical Comprehension and Mechanical Comprehension.

Step 4

Interview

You will conduct a formal Career interview to talk about the Profession and Role you have applied for a Cadetship in. It will also wider eligibility criteria and cover the initial stages of the Security application. This is normally conducted using your own device over the Shine video platform.

Step 5

Medical and Fitness Assessments

This is conducted at one of our Candidate Preparation Centres and will include a Fitness Assessment and Medical Assessment.

Step 6

Admiralty Interview Board (AIB)

This stage is unique to officers and takes place in two parts. A Pre-Recorded Interview (PRI) is an online assessment which assesses your motivation to join the Royal Navy as an officer and your awareness of the Royal Navy. The Group Planning Exercise (GPE) is the second stage of the AIB and is an online competency-based assessment which will take place on a separate day to the PRI. It will be conducted in a virtual group environment, and you will be assessed on your contribution to the team based on your individual performance.

Step 7

Final Selection Board

Final Selection Boards (FSB) are conducted in February, June and November each year. Candidates selected at FSB will be offered the relevant Cadetship.
