What you’ll do

The smooth running of a ship is about much more than on-point kit. Our people’s welfare needs to run smoothly, too. As an HR Administrator (Writer), you’re in charge of Human Resources (HR), handling legal matters, financial admin, and looking after the welfare of your crewmates. Whether you’re advising your Captain about promotions or organising your crewmates’ pay, it’s up to you to make things happen. It’s a unique job in a unique environment, and a great opportunity to discover what makes us tick – and how we keep ticking, all over the world.

Your role

  • Become an invaluable part of the behind-the-scenes team who keep the ship’s company running smoothly
  • Learn all the ins and outs of running an extremely tight HR operation, no matter where you are in the world – and regardless of the pressures of the operation you’re deployed on
  • Stay up to date with industry best practice, gaining recognised HR qualifications including an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business and Administration
  • Learn additional skills as an Incident Board Operator, where it’ll be your responsibility to pass vital information to Damage Control teams fighting fires and floods

What you'll need



  • There are no minimum qualification requirements
  • You need to be 16- 39 old 
  • You need to be within the healthy range for Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • A National of the United Kingdom, A Commonwealth Citizen or Dual National. 
  • Commonwealth applicants applying from inside their country of origin must be aged minimum 18.  If a resident in the UK Commonwealth applicants are eligible to apply at 16. Current valid passports and visas (where applicable) are a mandatory requirement to be eligible to apply, it is the responsibility of individual applicants to ensure that they have permission to be in the UK and this permission is valid for the entirety of the recruitment process up to the point entry.

Starting your career

Joining process

Once you’ve confirmed your eligibility, the joining process is as follows:

  • Submit an application

    Once you’ve registered your interest and have satisfied the basic eligibility criteria, you will be sent an online application form

  • Naval Service Recruitment Test (NRST)

    You’ll be tested on general reasoning, verbal ability, numeracy and mechanical comprehension

  • Interview

    A formal interview to talk through your suitability for the role

  • Medical and eye tests

    These are quite comprehensive and must be completed by one of our Ministry of Defence-approved doctors

  • Pre-Joining Fitness Test (PJFT)

    This involves completing a 2.4km run on a treadmill within a certain time, at a fitness centre near you

  • Pre Royal Navy Course (PRNC)

    This four-day induction to life in the Royal Navy is a pass or fail course

  • Start training

    Once you’ve passed a Security Check, you’ll be offered a place at HMS Raleigh

Initial training

Your Royal Navy career begins with 10 weeks’ basic training at HMS Raleigh, a shore base in Torpoint, Cornwall. The discipline, teamwork, organisational, firefighting and weapon handling skills you learn here will stay with you right through your career.

Aim to get yourself as fit as possible before you arrive. You’ll be doing a lot of physical exercise, and you’ll find it much easier if you’re already in shape. There’s also a swimming test, so if you can’t swim, make sure you learn by the time you join us.

Professional training

Once you have essential military and maritime skills under your belt, it’s time to start 16 weeks of specialist training. As an HR Administrator (Writer) you’ll embark on an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business and Administration and a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business Administration, among many others that include everything from Employee Rights and Responsibilities to Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT.
