Sport
Sport is a central part of life as a Royal Marine. It reflects our ethos, and contributes to the ongoing fitness of our Commandos. Playing sport at the highest level helps to develop the physical and mental robustness that are required on our most challenging operations.
The range of sporting opportunities open to you are immense, from representing us in international rugby and football competitions, through to the chance to shine on an individual level with anything from judo to athletics. Being in peak condition is essential for Royal Marines to cope with the rigours of everyday life, on and off the sports field. That’s why you’ll have free access to the gym, and be able to take advantage of our world-class sports facilities.

I only started judo because sport is so actively encouraged in the Royal Marines, and it’s a great way to stay in shape. The facilities are first-class and I get time off to compete. I’ve come a long way in just a few years, winning gold at the Samoa World Cup and being part of Team GB for London 2012.

I began bobsleigh at armed forces level before being selected for the Great Britain team. It’s definitely not a sport you get to take up as a civilian. And in my time with Great Britain I’ve been to some huge international events, including just missing out on gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

I’ve always been passionate about Rugby League, and I was fortunate enough to tour to New Zealand with the Royal Marines team. We were playing against some top level opposition and nobody gave us a chance. Our team ethic was so strong, we ended up putting in three exceptional performances.
