Royal Marines Commando Officer Pre-Joining Fitness Test Plus

Start your journey to unlock your potential and achieve your career ambitions

What is it?

Pre-joining Fitness Test Assesment

The Pre-Joining Fitness Assessment (PJFA) event is an opportunity to meet with the Royal Marines InReach team and start preparing for the Commando Preparation Course (CPC) and Royal Marines training.

The InReach team is made up of serving Royal Marines who are at various stages of their careers. They have been loaned to the careers service to mentor and guide you in your preparation for a career in the Royal Marines. The team is available to answer any questions you may have about life in the Royal Marines and can offer valuable insights based on their own experiences.

The first step is to assess your current fitness level with the PJFA. You can attend as many PJFA events as you need to prepare yourself physically and mentally for Royal Marine training.

What will I do?

The PJFA consists of 4 parts

-Bleep test to level 10.8

Maximum Effort:

-Press ups to the bleep

-Sit-ups to the bleep

-Pull-ups to the bleep

To successfully pass the CPC, you will need to complete a minimum of 30 press-ups, 40 sit-ups, and 4 pull-ups. However, it is always recommended to aim for maximum repetitions during the test to assess your fitness level accurately and identify areas that you need to work on.

You should never aim for the minimum during the test. It's always better to give it your all or not attempt it at all.

Swimming Assessment

Everyone that joins the Navy must know how to swim and you will be assessed on this before joining. The swimming assessment is conducted across the Candidate Preparation Course, the Recruit Orientation Phase and, for Royal Marines Officer candidates, the Royal Marine Officer Selection Course.

You will be expected to:

  • Step off a three-metre platform

  • Complete two laps of the pool, approximately 150m, using the breaststroke and without touching the sides or floor of the pool. There is no time limit

  • Tread water for two minutes

  • Climb out of the pool without using the steps

  • The test is conducted in swimming trunks or shorts without equipment and no goggles are to be worn unless for a medical reason.

Where is it and when?

Since June 2021, the PJFT+ has resumed being conducted at Nuffield Health Gyms across the country under the assessment of a Physical Training Instructor.

Please note, if you have transitioned your gender and are unsure of the standards you are required to achieve please contact your local Careers Office who will be able to advise you.

Typically, we’ll invite you to the PJFT+ within 28 days of you passing your medical.
