Royal Marines Band Service Initial Training

What is it?

14-week training programme

Providing you have met the criteria at the previous assessments, and depending on the number of candidates required, you‘ll be invited to attend Initial Military Training at Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM) near Exmouth in Devon.

There, you‘ll undertake a 14-week training programme, with a series of physical tests that, if passed, will prepare you for the start of your Royal Marines Band Service career.

What will I do?

During this intense but rewarding course, you‘ll be taught the basic military skills required to operate as a Royal Marines Musician or Bugler.

This will include:

  • Learning how to march correctly

  • Navigating independently and as part of a team

  • Looking after yourself on camp and in the field

  • Using service weapons safely.

Your physical fitness will also improve dramatically thanks to time spent with Physical Training Instructors in the gym - outside and in the pool. Although this training appears a world away from playing music, these skills are not only essential to perform our military role but transfer seamlessly to many elements of your future career in the Royal Marines Band Service.
