Admiralty Board

The Admiralty Board has command over the officers, ratings and marines of His Majesty's Naval and Marine forces.

The Board is also charged with the administration of all such matters relating to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines as may be administered by the Defence Council subject to Defence Council directions. In practice, it delegates these responsibilities to the Navy Board.

The Admiralty Board is chaired by the Secretary of State for Defence and comprises:

  • Secretary of State
  • Minister of State for the Armed Forces
  • Minister of State for Defence Procurement
  • Minister of State for Defence (Lords)
  • Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Defence People, Veterans and Service Families
  • Minister of State for Veterans’ Affairs
  • First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff
  • Second Sea Lord and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff
  • Fleet Commander
  • Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff
  • Finance Director (Navy)

The Permanent Under Secretary, Maritime Commander, Commandant General Royal Marines and the Navy Board Non-Executive Directors will also normally be in attendance.

Secretariat support is provided by the Naval Staff Policy/Secretariat and Sec/First Sea Lord.

Meetings normally take place once a year in January.
