The midshipman, who’s currently serving at the Wildcat Simulator/Training Centre at RNAS Yeovilton, was one of 7,000 people – the vast majority aged under 40 – at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Annual National Youth Retreat.
Better known as the ijtema, it’s an annual gathering near Bordon in Hampshire, allowing young Muslims from throughout the UK to meet, talk, celebrate their culture, show their sporting prowess and consider careers.
With a strong emphasis on moral, intellectual, and spiritual development, the gathering seeks to educate young people in the true, peaceful teachings of Islam and to inspire them towards serving both their faith and nation to the best of their abilities.
Over two days, the ijtema embraces a range of activities and events: sport - football, cricket, tug of war, strong man; academic competitions such as oratory, Quran recitations, poetry, quizzes; talks; an exhibition hall celebrating the history of Islam and the UK’s Muslim community; a bazaar; and a careers hub.
It draws around 7,000 people – aged seven to 40, plus representatives of the Elders Association – from all backgrounds, so offered Zain the chance to talk about his RN experience with a wide range of people with a strong sense of community and duty, who wouldn’t perhaps come into contact with the Senior Service regularly.
“There were plenty of positive engagements throughout the two-day event, and it was particularly impressive to witness such a strong interest in the Royal Navy,” said Zain.
“I had many thoughtful questions posed at me by the youth – some as young as ten – and inspired a few of similar ages to myself to submit an application.
“I also learned plenty about Ijtema and hope to attend again in years to come.”
His efforts championing the Senior Service were praised by Zia Mir, Armed Forces Liaison, Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK, who would welcome Zain’s return in future.
“Your presence, your ability to connect and talk with members and your enthusiasm was excellent,” Mr Zir told the junior officer.
“I commend you highly for the way in which you engaged. The conversations you had over the weekend were genuine and well received by the youth, and I very much look forward to your continued engagements in the future.”
