Children ask Navy Engineers ‘are we there yet?

Air Engineers at HMS Sultan gave children from Grange Infant School a special treat recently in order to help them with their studies.
A group of 90 children from year one spent the morning learning about helicopters within the Royal Naval Air Engineering & Survival Equipment School (RNAESS) as part of their topic for the term, ‘Are We There Yet?’
Under the guidance of Air Engineers, the children had the opportunity to enjoy an interactive tour of Stephenson Hangar, learning about helicopters and Survival Equipment within the Royal Navy.
In addition, the visit gave the children the opportunity to try items of kit on for themselves and to climb aboard many different airframes.
They’re having a great time, the children’s faces say so much, they are smiley and engaged.
Under the topic ‘Are We There Yet?’ the children have spent time in the classroom, learning about the different aspects involved with transport, including its many different modes, how it continues to evolve and how geography and map reading contribute towards a journey.
Jacqui Simpson, Year One Leader, Grange Infant School said: “We came last year and it’s an absolutely amazing opportunity for the children to experience loads of different types of transport that they wouldn’t ever get to see, or touch, or be in.
"They’re having a great time, the children’s faces say so much, they are smiley and engaged. Children who are normally quiet are speaking up and the ones with challenging behaviour are so engaged and behaving brilliantly.
"Over the next few weeks, we will be working on a literacy project about a car and afterwards the children will be encouraged to write about their own transport of choice, so the experience of going on a helicopter, in a jet fighter’s cockpit or trying out a life raft should offer plenty of inspiration.”
