Sailor receives special recognition

Sailor receives special recognition
24 October 2019
A Royal Navy sailor has received special recognition for his significant contributions to the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) community in Glasgow.

Lieutenant Commander Gary Farmer from the Royal Navy’s Special Engagement Team Scotland and Northern Ireland has received the ‘The Presidents Special Recognition Award 2019’ from the Scottish Ethnic Minority Sports Association (SEMSA). An award which is presented to an organisation or individual for their significant involvement with local communities.

Gary and his team have been supporting SEMSA events over the last four years. Assisting with events throughout the year such as badminton tournaments, 5k & 10k fun runs, youth summer camps and hosting the UK Asian Football Championships, which is now in its 21st year.

They also took the SEMSA Committee members for a weekend of teamwork, water sports and leadership activities at Rothiemurchus Adventure Training Lodge in the Cairngorm Mountains.

We work with diverse youth and community groups, facilitating a range of growth and learning opportunities to develop teambuilding, leadership, interpersonal and communication skills. Receiving this recognition and award has taken me completely by surprise.

The SEMSA was established in 1990 due to the lack of provisions available to the Black and Minority Ethnic communities of Glasgow. Since its inception SEMSA has created and provided culturally sensitive sporting opportunities to the BME community.

SEMSA recognises the need to challenge and tackle inequality, racism and discrimination in the field of sport as a core element of its work and is one of the leading national sports organisations run by, and for BME communities in Glasgow, organising and delivering sporting activities of interest.
