Plymouth raises the flag for Armed Forces Week

At a ceremony in the centre of Plymouth the Lord Mayor and Civic leaders raised the Armed Forces Day Flag at the start of Armed Forces week in the City.
Alongside the council was Commodore Peter Coulson, Naval Base Commander for HMNB Devonport and representatives from the Army and the Royal Air Force, as well as Army Cadets from the Air Training Corps of the local RAF.
Also on parade for the morning ceremony was veteran and standard bearers from the British Legion, Royal Naval Association RAF Association and other veteran organisations.
A special place in the line-up was also reserved for members of the Military Kids Club Heroes who represented the children of serving military personnel in the City.
Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to celebrate and say thank you to our serving military, for all the great work they do, whether here in our City or deployed around the Globe.
“Plymouth is very proud of its military history, and our Armed Forces that are based in the City,” said Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Richard Ball.
“Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to celebrate and say thank you to our serving military, for all the great work they do, whether here in our City or deployed around the Globe.
“It’s also a time when we acknowledge the support of their families and we thank them also for being part of our great community.”
Naval Base Commander, Commodore Peter Coulson also added; “The Royal Navy and Royal Marines are extremely proud to support Plymouth Armed Forces Day once more, alongside the Army, Royal Air Force and all our veterans and cadet organisations.
The Services have a long and successful relationship with the City of Plymouth and the surrounding communities, yet there are few occasions for us to join together to demonstrate out shared commitment.
“Armed Forces Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate that relationship and all that we achieve together, whether in Defence of the United Kingdom, providing stability around the world or supporting our city and its people.”
