HMS Collingwood goes the extra mile for RNRMC appeal

25 May 2018
Staff from HMS Collingwood came together to raise money for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) inspired by the recent traditional Army vs Navy rugby match at Twickenham.

The “HMS Collingwood Road to Twickenham Challenge” aimed to cover the distance from HMS Collingwood, near Fareham, to Twickenham Stadium over the course of the week, without leaving the Base.

This was a challenge thrown down by the RNRMC to all Royal Navy and Royal Marines Bases across the world and in HMS Collingwood’s case this distance equated to about 73 miles or 117482 metres.

Trainees studying at the Base filled the Sports and Recreation Centre to cover the distance and were given the option to use various methods of travel.

We’re delighted that the trainees from HMS Collingwood have chosen to support the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity’s Twickenham 100 challenge in such a creative manner.

Some opted for running, whilst others took the harder route of carrying their colleagues, hopping or crawling, with one intrepid soul “rowing” his part of the challenge.

Tim Corke from the RNRMC was present to watch and applaud the trainees’ efforts. He said, “We’re delighted that the trainees from HMS Collingwood have chosen to support the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity’s Twickenham 100 challenge in such a creative manner.

This exceptional fundraising effort will, in a very real way, help the RNRMC to support the entire naval family - regardless of rate, rank or specialization. Thank you very much to those who’ve taken part in the Twickenham 100 challenge.”

The RNRMC is the principal charity of the Royal Navy. For over ten years it has been the leading charity in the naval sector, having distributed in excess of £55 million across the naval fleet.

From life changing grants during times of immediate need, to smaller deployment grants that aide morale and retention, the RNRMC has helped ensure that over 700,000 serving personnel, families and veterans have received the support they needed.

By the end of the week, the Base had collected £115 which will be passed directly to the RNRMC to further their good work.
