Air Engineers lend their expertise to schools STEM day

Air Engineers from the Defence College of Technical Training’s (DCTT) Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School (RNAESS) at HMS Sultan visited Meoncross School recently, in order to help with a special Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) day.
Lieutenant Mike Doyle and Chief Petty Officer Mark Highland provided students from years 9 and 10 with Engineering themed team building and problem solving activities.
These involved asking them to use oversized 'Meccano' style kits to build various objects under time and communications constraints.
In addition, they gave a presentation on the various engineering roles available in the Royal Navy and, with the help of some of the excellent RNAESS training aids, provided an insight into the workings of both Internal Combustion and Gas Turbine engines.
It gave the pupils a challenge and helped them realise how working in a team is beneficial with a bit of competition thrown in
Watson from Meoncross School said, "The feedback from the pupils was fantastic, they all engaged after overcoming some initial hesitance by some which is always the case. It gave them a challenge and helped them realise how working in a team is beneficial with a bit of competition thrown in.
2018 is the Year of Engineering and as the home of Marine and Air Engineering training, HMS Sultan will be supporting events throughout the year, including by providing a new and exciting Engineering Zone at this year’s HMS Sultan Summer Show on 16th and 17th June.
