HMS Collingwood promotes healthy living through Health Fair

HMS Collingwood promotes healthy living through Health Fair
23 February 2017
Personnel across HMS Collingwood picked up tips for healthy living at the Unit Health Fair held recently at the Base.

Everyone, Service or Civilian, were welcomed to the event which was held in the Sports and Recreation Centre and which aimed to promote healthy lifestyles for all.

Inside the hall were stalls representing a variety of organisations including Diabetes UK, the British Heart Foundation and the World Cancer Research Fund offering plenty of leaflets and information.

NavyFit were on hand to promote their website which is open to anyone who is interested, be they civilian or military.

The Portsmouth Naval Gliding Centre parked a glider on the grass outside the SARC and inside visitors could enjoy an exhilarating on-board video filmed from the wing of a glider in flight.

Taster sessions were held so visitors could experience other sports including boxing, gymnastics, spinning, football, rugby and martial arts.

Personnel could find advice on Stress Management from the Institute of Naval Medicine whilst the Royal Navy Police offered guidance on securing your bicycle and other valuables.

They also encouraged visitors to don special goggles mimicking the visual disturbance experienced by people twice over the legal alcohol limit and by cannabis users.

Elsewhere in the Hall, individuals enjoyed healthy cooking demonstrations and, after a brisk sprint on a cycle attached to a smoothie machine, could then savour the fruits of their efforts.

Leading Physical Trainer (LPT) Luke Steele, the organiser of the event said, “I have generated the Unit Health Fair to update people on the forever changing information about nutrition, equipment, lifestyle opportunities and local clubs that are available, as there are also many personnel on board Collingwood that are at a loose end in the evenings.

“Therefore making these clubs common knowledge helps both our sailors and the local community.”
