Clyde sports facilities are ship-shape

8 February 2017
A major redevelopment of sports facilities at HM Naval Base Clyde has reached fruition with the official re-opening of the site’s main multi-games activity gym and swimming pool.

Over the past 14 months, the Base’s main fitness centre – known as the Sportsdrome – has undergone a major revamp.

In April last year a £250,000 upgrade of the weight room and cardiovascular suite was completed and on January 31 the official re-opening of the facility’s main gym and swimming pool was announced.

Captain of HMS Neptune, Captain Craig Mearns, officially re-opened the gym, with trainee Submariners from Clyde and Royal Marines from 43 Commando the first groups to be put through their paces by Physical Training Instructors.

A world-class navy deserves world-class facilities.

“A world-class navy deserves world-class facilities,” said Captain Mearns, “and with this re-development those working and living at HM Naval Base Clyde now have some of the best fitness facilities anywhere in the armed services.

“Sport and physical development are extremely important for our Service men and women,” he continued.

“Not only does it give us the opportunity to push ourselves individually and as a team, but if promotes vital qualities such as leadership, endurance and team work.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this project and especially the team from HMS Neptune Sportsdrome for their fantastic efforts.”

Both Babcock and Clark Contracts were also instrumental in the success of the refurbishment project, providing specialist guidance and advice.

Work undertaken included the complete replacement of the sprung, wooden flooring in the gym, new lighting, and colourful wall graphics supplied by firm Shutter Media.

A climbing wall has also been fitted at the far end of the gym, complete with auto belay system, meaning individuals can now climb without the aid of a second.

The Base swimming pool was completely drained, retiled and grouted, along with a make-over in the form of some inspirational prints surrounding the pool.

Warrant Officer Physical Training Instructor (WOPT) Leona Young, who heads up the team of Neptune Physical Trainers, said:   “It has taken around a year and a half to get where we are, but the entire team are delighted with the results.

“We welcomed our first customers to the new gym this morning – some trainee Submariners who we’ve been leading through circuit training – and the pool has been christened by Royal Marines from 43 Commando’s S-Squadron who have been conducting swim training in preparation for boarding operations.

“We are really looking forward to welcoming more personnel and their families in the coming weeks and months.”

The Sportsdrome facilities are available to serving personnel, civilians and their families at HM Naval Base Clyde, with the Base also hosting a number of community groups throughout the year.   Physical Trainers also run regular Lifeguard courses for personnel – accredited by the Royal Life Saving Society – and use the pool facilities for hydrotherapy sessions and diving training.
