During the summer holidays, 8 potential Naval Officers per week will be based at RNAS Culdrose’s satellite airfield Predannack, where they will learn all aspects of gliding.
But these courses are not just for anyone. Each student had to complete a detailed and stringent application process.
They all applied for a gliding scholarship from the Fleet Air Arm Officers Association.
I love teaching gliding as I love sharing my enthusiasm for flying with young people.
Lieutenant Colonel Ian McFarlane
The successful candidates received a bursary for the course, the aim of which is to educate them on all aspects of gliding and flying in a safe manner, and possibly even flying solo.
Most of the aspiring aviators are studying at University or 6th form. Some are apprentices. All want to join the military, most the Fleet Air arm, and most to fly.
Jolyan White from Kent said, ‘It’s an amazing opportunity to learn to fly.
“I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has been supporting us, I will hopefully put in into practice when I join the Fleet Air Arm.”
The instructors are all volunteers. They say they enjoy gliding and teaching flying. They love to see their students develop, growing in confidence and flying ability.
Lieutenant Colonel Ian McFarlane is one of the instructors. He said, “I love teaching gliding as I love sharing my enthusiasm for flying with young people.
“It also gives them an insight into the Royal Navy and wider military if they are interested in joining.”
Gliding is very weather dependent, but it is hoped that all the students will get plenty of time in the air, but also the chance to master all aspects of the preparation and support that goes into the sport.
We wish the students all the best in their flying and academic careers and hope to see them in the future as Officers in the Fleet Air Arm.
