ESS sponsored for snowy session

16 February 2016
Recently a team of ESS personnel, from HMS Collingwood’s main catering building, came together to complete Cancer Research UK’s Snowflake run in Southampton.

The event took place on Sun 7 Feb, with participants gathering on Southampton Common for the beginning of the race.

The 10k course saw the team, which consisted of 10 chefs and front of house personnel, race through a winter wonderland in the city’s first event of its kind.

The winter-themed route saw runners experience the ‘Snow Zones’, with ‘Polar Bear Hugs’ on offer to provide an added incentive to conquer the cold in aid of charity.

They took on the challenge, which was created to keep people running through winter, sporting team t-shirts and encouraging each other throughout the run.

For two of HMS Collingwood’s partakers the challenge was very much close to their heart, Front of House Manager Steph Culpitt and Front of House Supervisor Denise Assheton-Smith have a family member currently suffering with terminal leukaemia.

They said of the event “Everyone can relate to the effects Cancer has on people’s lives. It’s wasn’t just about how much we raise, it was about showing our support and completing it as a team.”

The ESS team, organised by fundraising enthusiasts Steph and Catering & Complex Manager Jay Averill, have beaten their donation goal of £1200 and have raised an impressive total of just over £1650.

They are now planning to enter a 5k ‘Gung-Ho!’ obstacle course event for their next fundraising mission.
