Operation Sophia

Operation Sophia is part of the Europe-wide response to the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. Established in 2015, its aim is to combat human trafficking and prevent loss of life.

What are we doing?

Four Royal Navy ships have been involved in Operation Sophia so far: the Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond, the Type 23 frigate HMS Richmond, and two Echo-class survey ships; HMS Echo and HMS Enterprise.

Together with ships from various other EU member states, they have taken part in the surveillance of human trafficking networks and conducted searches of suspicious vessels in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as rescuing migrants from stricken vessels.
