Widen Your World with a Royal Navy Apprenticeship

Kicking off National Apprenticeship Week for the Royal Navy is HMS Diamond, who hosted an inaugural event for their apprentices on board last week

Alongside an awards presentation, senior naval and MOD staff, including Vice Admiral Philip Hally, were part of the launch of the Royal Navy’s new apprenticeship campaign “Widen Your World”, followed by a Caribbean lunch prepared and served by Royal Navy catering apprentices.

The Widen Your World campaign aims to show how apprenticeships through the Royal Navy open up an extensive range of opportunities for young people, providing them with skills, knowledge and qualifications that can be used both in and out of the Armed Forces.

After the launch of Widen Your World, AB (AWT) Myles Tew and AB (AWT) Brandon Dunlop were presented with their apprenticeship certificates, they both achieved a Distinction, the highest grade, in the Data Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship. Their specialisation is Abovewater Warfare Tactical, meaning throughout their time in the RN they will work with some of the most advanced and sophisticated RADAR and Computer Systems on the planet. Not only were they among the first to complete their apprenticeships under the new campaign, they were also the very first in the Royal Navy to complete this course.

AB Tew said: “It’s an honour to be able to do this, and to set a precedent for others. A high point has been receiving the award today and meeting the Vice Admiral.”

AB Dunlop added: “It’s nice to see the hard work has come to a conclusion and the determination has paid off. This has given us the opportunity to gain a qualification whilst serving in the Royal Navy.”

The Royal Navy recognises the essential role apprenticeships play in addressing the critical skills shortage across all industries. Since 2002, the Royal Navy has trained over 50,000 apprentices across all branches including STEM, Catering & Hospitality, Transport & Logistics and Creative & Design. The Royal Navy is ranked second in the top 100 apprenticeship employers in the UK and received the Princess Royal Trust Training Award this year.

Through apprenticeship schemes, the Royal Navy can provide quality training and opportunities for a diverse range of individuals from a variety of backgrounds. The qualifications earned by Royal Navy apprentices equate to civilian roles too, ensuring our personnel are set with the skills and training for wherever life takes them.
