Royal Navy celebrates Commonwealth Day 2019

This week the Royal Navy’s Commonwealth Network invited personnel from across the Naval Base to celebrate the contribution of Commonwealth members in the Service.

On Tuesday the Naval Service Commonwealth Network (NSCN), a network for Commonwealth service personnel and their families, organised a colourful celebration for Commonwealth Day 2019 in the best way possible; food.

“This year’s theme is ‘A Connected Commonwealth’ and we thought this would be a brilliant way to do something that recognises this year’s Commonwealth Day,” says Petty Officer (PO) Racquel Marter, Deputy Chair of the NSCN.

The Commonwealth consists of 53 independent countries and events such as this help to bring them together, wherever they may be in the world. Commonwealth Day 2019 was officially celebrated on 11th March, however many members of the NSCN were representing the Naval Service in London so a second celebration was required.

The NSCN holds events and get togethers in HMS Nelson and in the local community on a regular basis including luncheons and games nights.

They also offer support and advice to those who need it, as well simply as a place to socialise.

PO Marter said: “The Royal Navy is diverse and we need to recognise the contribution that we make as Commonwealth serving members, and appreciate and share our experience with our colleagues.”
