HMS King Alfred Reservist awarded an OBE

Cdr Ian Harrop, who joined HMS King Alfred as part of the Firefly seamless transfer process from the Royal Navy to the Royal Naval Reserve, has been awarded the OBE for his work developing Engineering Apprenticeships.

Cdr Ian Harrop OBE RNR received his OBE from HRH Prince William the Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace on 31st Jan 19, having been named in the June 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. 

After 34 years’ service Cdr Harrop used the Firefly process to make a seamless transition to the RNR in February 2018, becoming one of the early members of the newly established RNR Engineering Branch. 

His award was a recognition of his development and delivery of an innovative and highly successful apprenticeship scheme for nuclear submarine technicians during the last 2 years.

This program has created significant opportunity for those looking for a non-university route to qualifications and has been featured in The Times and other national media.

Based at HMS King Alfred Cdr Harrop is currently supporting HMS Sultan as a project manager.
