Weapon Engineering Principles Officers visit Oxford URNU

Lieutenants Ollie James and Carl Marin-Ortega from the System Engineering Management Training Unit at HMS Collingwood recently briefed Oxford University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) students on the underlying weapon engineering principles behind torpedoes and missiles.

The lessons were identical to those given to graduate Weapon Engineer Officers undertaking the Engineering Principles Phase of training at HMS Collingwood, the Home of the Weapon Engineering Branch, which is delivered to Young Officers immediately upon completion of Initial Officer Training at Britannia Royal Naval College.

Lieutenant Will Jones, Commanding Officer Oxford URNU said, "2018 is the Year of Engineering in the Royal Navy and it was great to see that the lessons drew so much interest from the students". 

Oxford is one of 15 URNUs located across the UK offering opportunities to 750 undergraduates from the country’s leading universities.

The URNU's mission is "To develop an understanding of the Naval Service in undergraduates, so that those who go into civilian employment are positive advocates thereof and to facilitate a Naval Career for those who choose one."

The URNU is a chance to experience military life without commitment and gain new skills applicable to all walks of life.
