World of science and innovation at RNAS Yeovilton

The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) held an Innovation Event this week to encourage an innovative mind-set and culture across maritime aviation.

World of science and innovation at RNAS YeoviltonRoyal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton opened its Hangar doors where examples of successful innovation were on display from across the Royal Navy's flying arm along with other initiatives such as becoming a STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) Ambassador, becoming an Innovation Advocate and presenting ideas at the Dragon's Den Style 'Dare Lair'.

Rear Admiral Keith Blount CB OBE FRAeS welcome those in attendance himself finding the day itself inspirational saying, "An inspiring day where it has become very clear that everyone from the most junior sailor to the most technical scientist has a role to play in Royal Navy Innovation."

An inaugural FAA Innovation Day challenged individuals to think differently and encouraged personnel to consider how ideas at all levels might be implemented.

The Royal Navy Innovation Team, DARE (Discovery, Assessment and Rapid Exploitation) was established within Naval Command HQ to energise and accelerate innovation throughout the Naval Service in order to support operational capability.

The First Sea Lord’s innovation vision states, “From sailors operating at sea to scientists supporting future naval design, we must harvest the creativity, expertise and insights of all naval innovation stakeholders.

“In particular, we require a simple mechanism by which proven or promising ideas, from all levels of the Naval Service, can reach naval decision-makers in a coherent manner."
