Naval Base pauses for Remembrance Service

Dozens of military and civilian personnel from HM Naval Base Clyde gathered at the Naval Base Chaplaincy today, Thursday 9 November, for the site’s annual Remembrance service.

Held in The Church of St John the Evangelist, the solemn service gave Naval Base workers the opportunity to pause, pay their respects, and recall the sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country.

Led by Reverend Mark Dalton, Reverend Simon Horne and Father Michael Moloney, the service featured the traditional moment of silence followed by the Bosun’s Call signalling the participants to “carry on”.

During the service an Able Seaman from HMS Neptune also read the poignant Kohima Epitaph penned by John Maxwell Edmonds to commemorate the sacrifices made during the First World War:

“When You Go Home,

Tell Them of Us And Say,

For Their Tomorrow,

We Gave Our Today.”

The Act of Remembrance also included a reading of the Naval Prayer, which first featured in the Book of Common Prayer in 1662, with the service finishing with the National Anthem.
