829 Naval Air Squadron host STEM day at RNAS Culdrose

RNAS Culdrose recently welcomed 140 pupils from Devoran and Porthleven Schools for an interactive STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) session hosted by 829 Naval Air Squadron (NAS).

The children were treated to a variety of interactive activities, such as building engineering structures with large meccano, attempting to land paper aeroplanes on a scaled version of the Queen Elizabeth Class Carrier, and familiarising themselves with grid references in the form of a large scale game of battleships.

The budding engineers of the future also got the chance to build their own catapults, drive a simulated race car, dress up as a fire fighter, and understand how an engine works, and much more, helping them to gain an appreciation of basic engineering principles.

At the end of the day, Commanding Officer of 829 NAS, Commander Kay Burbidge, presented pupils who had won the ‘leadership’, ‘launch’ and ‘battleship’ challenges with their certificates and prizes.

The keen students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the chance to see inside an operational hangar, with one of them saying:

“The STEM day at Culdrose was inspirational. I really recommend this for people who want to make their dreams come true of becoming an engineer or pilot”.
