Royal Navy and Glasgow Hawks strengthen union

The Royal Navy Rugby Union and The Glasgow Hawks Rugby Football Club got together in the spirit of cooperation and friendship to reinforce the existing partnership between their organisations.

On Thursday 14 December, Rear Admiral John Weale, Flag Officer for Scotland and Northern Ireland and Kenny Hamilton, President of Glasgow Hawks Rugby Football Club signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

The aim of the MOA is to further establish and advance the sport of rugby in the local community and enrich both organisations through the sharing of skills, training and coaching.

“This is an exciting initiative and has enormous mutual benefit. Hawks is a proven pathway to the top end of the game in Scotland with ten Hawks players moving on to full-time contracts over the last two seasons,” said Kenny Hamilton, the President of Glasgow Hawks

“Our hope is that we can help some of the Royal Navy’s top performers on that pathway. In addition this strengthens the community links that the Royal Navy in Scotland already has. We look forward to developing this relationship over the next five years.”

The agreement will reaffirm the long standing relationship which already exists between the Royal Navy in Scotland and the Glasgow Hawks and both will benefit from the arrangement.

Rear Admiral John Weale, signing on behalf of the Royal Navy in Scotland, said, “I’m really pleased to be able to sign this agreement between the Royal Navy in Scotland and the Glasgow Hawks. The Navy is growing in Scotland and for many of my people Glasgow is their home.

“I will be incredibly proud of any of my sailors or marines able to pull on a Hawks strip and play rugby at such a good level. The Hawks are great ambassadors for the game with a track record of producing talent for the highest levels of Scottish rugby,” said .

“The spirit of team work, self-discipline and mutual respect that are so important to the success of my sailors and marines, are equally important to the success of the Hawks when they play.”
