Sultan sailor's charity cycle home for Christmas

A sailor from HMS Sultan is preparing himself to take on his latest gruelling challenge for charity.

Last Christmas, Engineering Technician (Marine Engineering) Adam “Griff” Griffiths completed a 170 mile nine day row-a-thon, across the equivalent distance from HMS Sultan, Gosport, to his home in Uttoxeter.

The row brought in over £1,000 for The Salvation Army Christmas Appeal and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) who provide support to Service personnel.

Buoyed by the experience Adam has decided to try and cycle the same distance this year in just 12 hours!

Adam was first inspired into fundraising after hearing about a homeless man who had frozen to death in Birmingham. He said: “It was a real shock to the system to hear about the hardships that many homeless people suffer in this modern age.

 “Last year I just really wanted to do what I could and raise awareness.

“Doing the same distance again in just one day is going to be a massive physical and mental challenge.

“Hopefully it will help bring home a really important message again this year that we all need a safe place where we can rest.

“With any luck people will get behind me, as although you can’t change the world on your own, together we can make a difference.”
