HMS Sultan’s Boxing Squad demonstrated their skill of hand in the ring recently at the Defence College of Technical Training’s Inter-College Boxing Competition.
The Defence College of Technical Training (DCTT) educates personnel from all three Services in several different specialist areas: aeronautical engineering (AE), electro and mechanical engineering (EME), marine engineering (MarE) and communication and information systems (CIS).
The inaugural Competition was hosted by (Royal School of Signals) Signal Regiment, Defence School of Communication Blandford and competing teams from REME and HMS Sultan took up the opportunity to join them in the ring.
Nine bouts of three two minute rounds were on the evening’s card with Sultan’s boxing squad made up of trainees from DCTT’s the Defence School of Marine Engineering (DSMarE) and Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School (RNAESS).
Of the five who had travelled to the competition as part of the boxing squad four made it into the ring, with AET John Young’s bout sadly a late cancellation.
There were wins for ET ME Connor McLellan who won by first round referee stoppage, and ETs Michael Stappard and Kevin Dring who both won by points decision and a loss by referee stoppage for ET Joseph Bartlett.
Points were awarded on a sliding scale for a Walk Over, Win On points, Knock Out and disqualification. As the evening unfolded and results were tallied, Sultan were declared victors with eleven points in first place, 11 Signals Regt second with six points and REME third with four.
The Sultan Boxing Squad was coached to victory by Petty Officer Physical Trainer Peter ‘Ozzy’ Oswald and Errol ‘Tommo’ Thompson. Ozzy said, “As Sultan’s Boxing coaches, we could not be prouder.
“The lads have spent so much time in the gym over recent months working towards this event, not only training in the evenings but also early in the mornings, all whilst completing a high demanding career course.
“To come away with a victory on the Army’s own soil made the victory even sweeter and the lads should be very proud of this achievement. This is just the beginning of their boxing futures!”
