Captain of HMS Neptune, Captain Craig Mearns, presented a number of efficiency awards on Wednesday, September 14, recognising personnel who have contributed to improving life at HM Naval Base Clyde.
The awards came at the tail-end of the Captain’s “clear lower deck” – a gathering of HMS Neptune’s Naval personnel and civilian colleagues.
There were four awards presented by Captain Mearns with the first certificate of commendation going to HMNB Clyde’s Finance Team for first-class work steering the base’s Physical Training Instructors (PTIs) through the financial issues associated with refurbishing the Base’s gym facilities.
Harry Scammell, Donemma Greenwell and Gillian Yule, received the award in front of the packed audience.
Next up was Leading Logistician (L(Logs)) Nicholas Henbrey who was praised for his attitude, demeanour and ethos, showing “dedication and devotion to HMS Neptune”.
Petty Officer (Mine Warfare) (PO(MW)) Douglas Seaman was also commended for his duties as Assistant Barrackmaster.
The PO was praised for going beyond the call of duty and working as a tireless advocate to improve the conditions of those based at Clyde.
Also commended for improving standards was Regulating Petty Officer ( RPO) Luke Skilton who worked closely with the Barrackmaster to drive a considerable improvement in cabins within Single Living Accommodation at the Base.
Finally, there was a surprise award for the Captain himself.
Base Executive Officer Commander Jim Hayle presented a certificate admitting him to: “The Ancient Order of Barking Dogs”, in recognition of Capt Mearns participation this year’s 42-mile Keswick to Barrow Walk.
“The fact that HMS Neptune is a ‘stone frigate’ shouldn’t prevent us from working as a ship’s company,” said Captain Mearns.
“HMS Neptune is at the heart of the Naval Base and is what makes it tick. Each of the award winners today has contributed significantly to improving conditions for personnel based at Clyde and I thank them for their hard work and dedication.”
