Representatives from the Royal Navy have been presented with special edition signed Liverpool FC poppy shirts on behalf of the Royal British Legion which will now be auctioned by the charity.
LFC commemorated Remembrance weekend by playing in the special kit, featuring poppies, when they hosted Watford at Anfield in the Premier League on November 6th.
After the game, the Reds squad signed their worn jerseys which have now been donated to the Royal British Legion for auction on its eBay site to raise valuable funds.
Lance Corporal Chris Murphy, Royal Marines Reserve Merseyside; Able Seaman Barry Jones, HMS Eaglet; Writer Tom Ashton, Naval Regional Command Northern England; and Chief Petty Officer Tony McTigue, Liverpool University Royal Naval Unit, were handed the 20 match day shirts by LFC captain Jordan Henderson.
Last year’s poppy shirts – worn by the team during their Remembrance Sunday fixture against Crystal Palace – raised more than £22,000.
These vital funds help the Royal British Legion’s work supporting today’s generation of Armed Forces families and veterans, whether living with an injury or illness, coping with bereavement or finding employment.
Further funds for the Poppy Appeal were raised with a pre-match bucket collection around the stadium.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said: “We want to show our appreciation and thank all of our Armed Forces personnel for the fantastic work they do, and their families who support them.”
The Royal British Legion’s director of fundraising, Claire Rowcliffe, added: “We are extremely grateful for the support the Premier League clubs and football community show the Poppy Appeal year on year.
“The Legion’s work is entirely dependent on the public’s generous support – so please wear your poppy with pride, knowing you have made a real difference to the lives of service men and women, veterans and their loved ones.”
