Portsmouth based frigate, HMS Richmond, has had a successful and engaging visit to Cardiff for the first time since 2003 in order to show her support and aid with the Royal British Legion (RBL) annual Poppy Appeal.

HMS Richmond’s first evening in port was spent conducting a capability demonstration where local dignitaries and friends of the RBL from all sorts of organisations were invited on board the ship for drinks, speeches and a chance to meet and discuss life in the Royal Navy with her crew.

Saturday saw members of the Ships Company ashore in uniform assisting with the Poppy Appeal at key locations around Cardiff.

Making the most of the large crowd that had gathered to watch the Wales v Australia Rugby Union test, the RBL were able to collect £18,000 on that day alone which will go a long way to help them reach their total for this year.

That evening culminated with The Royal British Legion Wales festival of remembrance which was attended by a nominated selection of the Ship’s Company.

Sub Lieutenant Katrina Duxbury said, “It was an honour and a privilege to take part in the 36th annual festival of remembrance.”

On the Sunday the ship was open to visitors and HMS Richmond welcomed nearly 3000 guests on board. There were multiple stances around the ship, informing the public on the roles of the Royal Navy in a modern and changing world and what it was like to be a crew member on one of Her Majesty’s ships.

Representatives from the RBL Poppy Appeal were also onboard that day, to raise awareness and support for all services of the armed forces.

The final day alongside in Cardiff was dedicated to local schools and colleges which allowed them the opportunity to visit the ship and enjoy tours and briefs by members of the Ships crew.

The Commanding Officer of HMS Richmond, summing up their few days alongside Cardiff, commented, “It has been a busy but enjoyable few days for HMS Richmond and her crew.

“My Ship’s Company have had such a warm welcome from the people of Cardiff and have had a great time getting to explore this historic city as well as share their experience in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to be involved with such a worthy cause.”

HMS Richmond is conducting maritime security patrols and maintenance trials as part of her operational front line duties in her new adapted force manning profile.
