Ten tips for surviving HMS Raleigh... from the recruits who learned the hard way

If you’ve decided to join the Royal Navy – or are considering a future with us – you’re just a few steps away from a truly rewarding career that will see you take on new adventures, all over the world.

But before you can join your crewmates, you’ll need to pass a series of tests and assessments that prove you can handle life in the Royal Navy, the last of which is ten weeks of Basic Training.

Getting through Basic Training is tough, but like all tests, preparation is key to success. To help you get ready, we’ve been asking some week 7 recruits what they wish they’d known before arriving at HMS Raleigh.

These men and women have first-hand experience of the challenges you’ll face. This is your chance to learn from the people you’ll be working with. Check out their top ten tips.

How many of these tips you take on board is up to you, but the smarter you can be in the lead up to your Basic Training, the more chance you have of passing out at the end of the 10 weeks. Earning your place in the Royal Navy, at a ceremony attended by your friends and family, is an achievement that will stay with you for life. You’ll always remember it as where your adventure started.
