Two North East Reservists from HMS Calliope who have accrued over 50 years’ service between themselves (58.5 years to be precise!) have been rewarded for their outstanding efforts and achievements.
Petty Officers Chris Dixon and Jim Hudson were presented with Lord Lieutenant’s Certificates for Meritorious Service to recognise their excellent work in delivering training and mentoring junior sailors within their Reserve Unit.
Their work has been crucial for ensuring that HMS Calliope’s Naval Reservists are fit, motivated and ready to serve alongside the UK’s Armed Forces (or those of our Allies) anywhere in the world.
The two enterprising Senior Rates have served their country on live operations and strengthened international relations between the Royal Navy and our international allies.
Chris and Jim were presented with their certificates by the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Mrs Susan Winfield OBE, at an Awards Ceremony on the 23rd February.
The Lord Lieutenant is Her Majesty’s representative in Tyne and Wear and therefore being selected to receive the award is seen as a real honour – in this case both individuals were selected from a cast of almost 100 other Naval Reservists!
During their half century of service, they have served all over the world, including Europe, the Middle East, the United States and the Far East.
Chris said: “As a Warfare Specialist, I’ve had the chance to use my training for real when I was deployed to the Gulf in 2003 for Operation Telic.
“Since then I’ve served on 4 more deployments and have been able to develop my skills further.
“As a Senior Rate in HMS Calliope I enjoy mentoring and developing the next generation of Naval Reservists.”
Jim added: “I’ve really enjoyed my time with HMS Calliope – I particularly enjoy working with my international colleagues and I was fortunate to recently work with my counterparts in the United States Navy and I’ve made some life-long friends and been to places others can only dream of.
“A highlight of this deployment was presenting an HMS Calliope ship’s crest to the Commander of the US Naval Reserve Forces.”
The Commanding Officer of HMS Calliope, Commander Ian White said: “Chris and Jim can be justifiably proud of their award.
“We also recognise the ongoing support they receive from their friends, families and employers.
“They are great role models and exemplify what can be achieved from a career in the Maritime Reserve.”
