Royal Marines host fathers and sons at work

Royal Marines from Plymouth-based 30 Commando welcomed their fathers and sons into the workplace to sample life as a Commando.

Proud fathers and sons of serving Royal Marines enjoyed an action-packed day at Royal Marines Barracks Stonehouse.

The guests were shown how to fire assault rifles on a 25-metre range, abseil from a high platform, take a ride on an off-shore raiding craft and learn survival techniques allowing Marines to operate for extended periods of time in some of the harshest environments in the world.

Warrant Officer Mark Syms said, “The Fathers and Sons day event is an annual feature of the Commando Forces Sergeants’ Mess social calendar. It is an opportunity for family and friends to have an insight into Royal Marines life and is always well supported.”  

He added, “This year’s event was a fantastic success and jam-packed with different events, finished off by a full regimental dinner. Despite its busy schedule, 30 Cdo enjoys organising and running this event. The feedback from attendees has been incredibly positive.”

Sergeant Robbie Garthland, 36, Unit Physical Training Instructor said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to give something back to your loved ones while also delivering a brief insight into how we conduct our day-to-day jobs. 

"The main event in the evening was a regimental dinner in honour of our fathers, sons and uncles and was one of the best ways to round off any day.”
