The senior training officer of Bristol University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) has received a top award in recognition of his dedication to training URNU students over the last 20 years.
Lieutenant (Lt) Christopher Cameron was selected to receive one of Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol’s certificate for meritorious service. The award was presented at a ceremony in the Merchant Venturers’ Hall in Clifton.
A previous Gordon Highlander, Lt Cameron joined Bristol URNU as a training officer in 1995. Over this period, he has mentored over 350 URNU students teaching them skills such as navigation and leadership, as well as accompanying them on several deployments around the UK and Europe.
Upon receiving the award Lt Cameron said: “I am shocked but thoroughly thrilled to have received this.”
The certificate for meritorious service is used to reward long service of high quality, periods of intense and exceptional output in support of units. Candidates for the award must be seen, amongst their peers and within the communities in which they serve and live, to show outstanding examples of leadership, commitment and enduring performance in post.
Lt Lorna Wilson, his commanding officer, said: “Lt Cameron is extremely dedicated, whilst leading by example in motivating and developing the students. He is thoroughly deserving of this award.”
Lt Cameron currently lives in Cherhill, Wiltshire with his wife and two children.
There are 14 URNUs located across the UK offering opportunities to 700 undergraduates from the country’s leading universities. Bristol URNU primarily draws its members from the University of Bristol, University of West England and University of Bath
The URNU aims to broaden understanding of the Royal Navy among university students. It offers students who show leadership potential the chance to develop these skills through maritime experience and exposure to the Royal Navy’s values and ethos.
