HMS Collingwood Open Day

Saturday 2 June 2018

On Saturday 2 June 2018 a fantastic event will take place at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, Hampshire, when the establishment opens its gates for the annual Open Day, sponsored by Eight Wealth Management, featuring the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) Field Gun Competition.

The Field Gun Competition will feature crews from across the UK and as far afield as Gibraltar competing for the coveted Brickwoods Trophy.

The competition is fast and furious and requires 18-man teams to run, dismantle, reassemble and fire the gun in the shortest possible time. Strength, stamina, and team work are essential in this challenge. The selected crew members began training in March.

During the Open Day there will be attractions, entertainment and displays designed to capture the imagination of everyone.

The Interactive Zone includes RN helicopters, hands-on activities and the high rope challenge. Attractions for our younger guests can be found in the Toddler Zone, whilst the older children can enjoy the free Fun Fair.

Parts of the base are open to visitors, allowing them to see the Royal Navy’s training equipment and experience some training first hand, navigating a ship into harbour on our Warship Bridge Simulator.

The gates will open at 0930. A Free bus service will run twice per hour from Fareham and Gosport and back.

Once the entrance fee is paid all entertainment and attractions are free of charge.

Field Gun Competition

The most spectacular event at HMS Collingwood's Open Day is the the historic Royal Navy Field Gun Competition.

Crews representing units of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines as well as the British Army and Royal Air Force, will compete and as such the event is well supported by the senior ranks of all three Services.

Each crew of 18 highly disciplined, motivated, and physically fit field gunners, races to assemble an antique field gun and run with it, disassembling and reassembling as the competition requires, before dramatically dragging the gun home, maintaining the spirit of the Royal Navy’s contribution to the relief of Ladysmith.

History of the Brickwood Trophy

Brickwood, the Sunshine Brewers of Portsmouth, whose business in 1970 stretched from Sussex to Dorset and north towards London, was once a familiar name in the area.
Today the brewery is only a memory, although many pubs, especially in Portsmouth, have preserved their Brickwood frontages. But the name lives on with the annual Field Gun competition for the magnificent Brickwood Trophy, which dates back 100 years.

GYROSCOPE

Should you ever decide to go up in space, where we all know there is no gravity, this is what you will have to practise on.

Okay, NASA's version might be a little bigger and cost more, but the principle is exactly the same. We've all seen film of astronauts floating around the Space Station and that's exactly what you can imagine doing when we strap you into our Gyroscope Ride.

It really is amazing fun and most people find that one go is not enough.

HYDROGEN HERO

The University of Birmingham will be demonstrating their futuristic hydrogen-powered locomotive

HM Collingwood Volunteer Band

HMS Collingwood Volunteer Band is comprised of both serving members of the Royal Navy and civilian staff at HMS Collingwood, as well as a number of other personnel associated with the Establishment.
