Location - Portsmouth

Portsmouth is an historic city. It is famous for being the home of the Royal Navy, the birth place of Charles Dickens, and the home for many years of Arthur Conon Doyle (the author of Sherlock Holmes). Portsmouth is also a bustling modern city http://www.visitportsmouth.co.uk/.

The Gunwharf Quays (a short walk from the Holiday Inn) is one of Britain’s premier outlet shopping sights, as well as containing numerous bars and restaurants https://gunwharf-quays.com/.

Gunwharf is also the location of Spinnaker Tower – Britain’s tallest coastal viewing tower, with a glass floor raised 100metres above the city https://gunwharf-quays.com/leisure/emirates-spinnaker-tower.

Portsmouth - Military Context

The island city of Portsmouth is the historic home of the Royal Navy; all around are reminders of the city’s naval past, and of its on-going naval importance – with the dockyard currently preparing to be the home of the new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers.

Part of the naval base is now open to the public http://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/.

There are numerous attractions at the Historic Dockyard including the National Museum of the Royal Navy, the Tudor ship The Mary Rose, HMS M33 (the only surviving ship from the 1915 Gallipoli campaign), HMS Warrior, and of course HMS Victory (Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar, and the oldest commissioned warship in the world).
