Coasteering in Cornwall on the historical Commando Ridge

Storyline: Coasteering

The Royal Navy Adventurous Training Team (RNATT) conducted some high-octane training along the coast of west Cornwall between the 17th and 20th of April.

The aim was to establish new coasteering routes in the area and practice lead climbing on some classic Cornish Sea cliff routes.

This spectacular area of Cornwall offers much for the Adventurous Training enthusiast and the Royal Navy owns a lodge in St Just where all activities are based from.

Coasteering and rock climbing really test an individual’s nerve and resilience through exposure to the demands of the ocean or operating at height. Developing these qualities are crucial to enhancing the Royal Navy’s operational effectiveness.

The RNATT climbed the historical ‘Commando Ridge’, a classic airy route steeped in history as it was a route used to teach World War 2 Commandos how to climb.

WO2 Stan Bloomer RM, 2IC of RNATT said: “ West Cornwall and the Royal Navy Lodge in St Just offer an amazing opportunity for our Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel to learn something new, push their boundaries and develop themselves physically and mentally in truly spectacular, unforgiving surroundings, an opportunity not to be missed”.

The Royal Navy Lodge is available for personnel to book to participate in Adventurous Training activities.
