Going out strong

Split into groups across the two courses, players teed off in high spirits, determined to do the course and their golf justice despite the blustery, showery weather. The conditions did not deter any player though, and it wasn’t long before some very interesting scores were being registered.

With the best three from four scores counting towards each round, SURFLOT WEST took an early lead, posting 101. MOD Abbeywood were five shots behind in second place.

Individual scores ranged from eight to 38, with CPO Michael Harrison from 1710NAS taking an early lead after the first round.

Coming home stronger

The players switched courses for their second round. With the weather upping its game too, winds gusted up to 35mph. This barely bothered the players though, who were all still delighted to be playing at playing at St Andrews - the home of golf – as the Old Course continued gto be prepared for the 150th Open in July.

Indeed, scores were even better in the second rounds, ranging from 11 to 39. The competition was made even fiercer as many of those posting better scores in the morning, were not necessarily doing so well in the afternoon - and vice versa.

Making the cut

PO Dan Filbey (Culdrose) registered the highest score of the competition, posting 39pts in his second round. But the two steady rounds of 36 and 37 by 40CDO’s WO2 Mark Goodridge conquered all to secure his win in the Individual event. Securing his win by a single point from WO Kenneth Kennedy from SURFLOT WEST and two points over 3rd placed AB Alex Kippen from HMNB Devonport, all three recorded steady scores for both rounds.

Looking East

It is hoped that the Royal Navy Golf Association can secure the event at St Andrews once again in 2025. Next year the event returns to the Eastern Region, with the finals taking place at Hayling GC on Tuesday May 16, 2023.
