HMS Richmond takes to the lakes and slopes of Iceland

HMS Richmond took part in an action-packed 4 days of skiing, stand-up paddleboarding and hiking in Reykjavík, Iceland, organised and delivered by the Royal Navy Adventurous Training Team (RNATT)

After a solid month of exercises at sea the adventurous training was a well earned respite from day-to-day work; venturing out to some incredibly beautiful and remote areas. It was for most a once in a lifetime, challenging, yet highly rewarding experience. The skiing and standup paddleboarding (SUP) packages were designed to develop novices’ ability and refine those with more experience surrounded by a backdrop of incredible natural beauty.

Hiking to a variety of stunning waterfalls whilst watching Icelandic sea eagles soar above, left an indelible and powerful mark on the memories of all who were lucky enough to experience them.

The Royal Navy provides bespoke adventurous training solutions across the globe to all Royal Navy ships and units, whether at sea on operations or on land. These sorts of experiences are available to all that would just reach out and take the opportunities the team exist to provide.

A member of HMS Richmond, PO Woodley said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic experience being with the Royal Navy adventurous training team today and for our people to get out on the slopes and the water here in Iceland, it’s been a dream come true. Thank you for this brilliant opportunity.”
